Ibiza Travel Advice for First-Timers

When I first visited Ibiza I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew it was one of the one of the premiere party spots in the world, but other that I had no clue about the island. To Europeans, Ibiza is a little bit like Vegas or South Beach. It’s a magical party place where they can go and get away from their normal lives not to mention close geographically (30 minute flight from Madrid). For us Americans, it’s a long journey, the dollar isn’t worth as much as it used to and we have a limited number of vacation days so planning is definitely needed to make sure this trip is an epic one. I’ve traveled to Ibiza for the past 5 summers, so I can consider myself a seasoned Ibiza Vet. I also run a travel company (http://www.ToursGoneWild.com) that takes people to Ibiza, so I need to know the ins and outs of the island as well as get great feedback from my suppliers that live there all year. To make your Ibiza Trip ONE FOR THE AGES, I’ve compiled a brief list of suggestions to make sure you don’t make some of the mistakes I and others have made in the past.

  1. WHERE TO STAY – Try to stay in Ibiza Town or close to it. Great suggestions are Playa d’en Bossa, Figueretes or Talamanca areas. All are close to the center of town and to 2 of the islands best clubs – Space & Pacha. AVOID SAN ANTONIO. It is a little grimy and full of young college students. If you are looking for an upscale holiday, do not stay there.
  2. PICK YOUR NIGHTS IN ADVANCE – If you have a set DJ in mind that you want to see, definitely purchase the club tickets or make table reservations in advance. Most clubs in Ibiza sell out for the big DJs so you don’t want to get there and not be able to see your favorite DJ. If you book with TGW, an Ibiza Expert will assist you in picking the best nights for your dates. Your club tickets will be delivered to you when you arrive at the airport.
  3. IF YOU ARE A DRINKER, GET TABLE SERVICE – Some people find this out the hard way (…meL). Keep these numbers in mind – 60 – 80 Euros Cover & 15 Euros per drink. It’s very easy to spend over 200 Euros in 1 night without getting the VIP Treatment. If you have connections in Ibiza, you can get a minimum consumption with bottle service between 200 to 400 Euros per person per night. It’s definitely worth it because you will spend just as much and get a lot more. C
  4. RENT A CAR/SCOOTER OR HIRE A CAR SERVICE – Although Ibiza can be considered a small island, it’s actually pretty spread out. From my experience it also seems that the more posh the event or place, the further it is from everywhere. Keep in mind that the island does crack down on drinking and driving so if you are drinking, the best choice is hiring a driver.
  5. GO IN JULY OR SEPTEMBER – July is a very good month to go in that all of the top DJs are on the island and it’s not as unbearably packed as August, which is the most expensive month to go. You will get the best deals in September and if you wait until mid to late of the month, you will have access to some of the best parties of the season – The Closing Parties.
  6. DO NOT MISS AN IBIZA SUNSET – Ibiza sunsets are world famous. Two of my favorite places to watch the sunset are in San Antonio by Café del Mar and Sunset Ashram. An Ibiza sunset is extremely cool especially as it’s done to chill out music and once it sets, the place erupts in claps and cheers as if it was a big time production.
  7. CHOOSE A TRAVEL COMPANY  – If you want a no hassle experience, go with TGW Travel Group. We take care of everything and all you have to worry about is having a great time. Check out our Ibiza Vacation Packages

Its origins are said to come from Europe, where Carnival festivities comprised mostly of balls & masquerade parties. The modern day Brazilian Carnival has evolved to include Native American and African culture in its celebration. Rio de Janeiro Carnival is a wild 4-day celebration. Year after year it starts on Saturday and ends on Fat Tuesday. It normally takes place in February, which is right in the middle of Summer and Brazil’s hottest month. Our Rio Carnival Package gives you access to the hottest parties that week. Dates: Week before Ash Wednesday. See the Rio Carnival Dates for all years.

5. New Years in Rio de Janeiro New Years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is one of the most amazing cities in the world and one of my favorite travel destinations. Its annual New Year’s Eve extravaganza puts all New Year’s celebrations to shame. Millions pack the city for an all-night festival of music, food, and fun, punctuated by spectacular fireworks. From mind-blowing scenery and incredible beaches to wild nightlife and beautiful people, Rio de Janeiro will make your New Years an unforgettable experience. TGW’s New Year’s in Rio package includes airfare, accommodation, airport transfers, ½ Day Tour, VIP Service, and the choice of watching the fireworks on Copacabana Beach with a guide or attending one of the most exclusive parties in Rio for New Years. 6. Running of the Bulls The Running of the Bulls is held every year between July 6th and 17th. It is one of the world’s craziest and wildest festivals where people run through the streets of the medieval city with actual live wild bulls. Every year over one million party-goers flock to Pamplona and party day and night drinking Sangria, eating delicious tapas and for the brave ones – run for their lives in front of angry bulls! For the Running of the Bulls, TGW offers airfare, hotel accommodation, airport/hotel transfers, a city tour, and access to a VIP Balcony to watch the running of the bulls with breakfast. The 3-day event/concert is just a part of Miami Music Week and to be honest, it’s just a minor part of the wildness as other events throughout the week pass it in overall craziness as well as musically. From private parties, where you can catch guest DJs spinning for the pure love of music, Yacht parties, amazing pool parties involving sexy models, and more! Jet-set Summer Parties in Florianopolis, Brazil or Punta del Este, Uruguay If you are looking to go where the South American Jet-set as well as International Jet-Set are going this winter (Summer in South America), mark your calendar for Florianopolis or Punta del Este. The best time of the year to travel to Punta del Este is mid-December to mid-January. There are a ton of special events during this time and New Year’s Eve is one of the highlights. Florianopolis is a great place to go between mid-December to right after Carnival (End of Feb.). It is considered by many as the most up and coming Jet-Set destination in South America and a place that provides you with incredible beaches, surf, beautiful people, and up-scale parties. The Best Carnival in Brazil is ….

Carnival is celebrated all over Brazil, but the the two most popular Carnivals are Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia. What is the Best Carnival in Brazil? We offer both and It is extremely hard to pick which is better. In Salvador, you feel as you are in a huge non-stop party because there are millions of people on the street – dancing, drinking, following their favorite bands – it’s actually the largest street party in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. In Rio de Janeiro, it’s literally one of the most amazing shows I have seen in my life – the costumes, choreography, music, passion – It beats the hell out of any Vegas Show (makes a Vegas Show look like a Highschool play).

If you are interested please contact Tours Gone Wild IMMEDIATELY at leads@toursgonewild.com or toll free 1-877-456-WILD or (786) 522-3667. It’s a can’t miss event and we offer the following packages: Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Salvador Carnival, Ultimate Package (Combination of Salvador & Rio) Below I have compiled a comparison of both Carnivals. If you have been to either one, PLEASE contribute.

Factors Rio Salvador Comment
Weather X X It’s late summer in both destinations. Expect weather in the high 70s to high 80s
Flight Time X   Rio de Janeiro is a much larger airport than Salvador and there are direct flights to Rio or Sao Paulo from all over the world. To get to Salvador, you would need to connect in another Brazilian city before getting there.. The flight time between Sao Paulo or Rio and Salvador is 2.5 hours vs. a just 45 minute from Sao Paulo to Rio.
English Spoken
X
Rio de Janeiro is a much larger city and English is spoken more in Rio, but generally you will not find a lot of English speakers in Brazil in general. There will be TGW staff members in both cities so they will help you out as much as possible.
Food
X
The Salvador cuisine is world reknown and delicious. If this was any other time besides Carnival, I would go with Salvador, but during Carnival, you will have a lot more options in Rio for food because it is a larger city.
Beaches
X
Salvador has a ton of beaches, but between both cities, you can’t top Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, especially because of the eye candy.
For Singles
X
The best carnival for singles is in Salvador. You have Brazilians from all over the country that go to this Carnival and the main slogan is “Solteiro em Salvador!”, which means Everyone is Single in Salvador!
For Couples
X
X
If you want a more romantic experience, I would definitely go with Rio because there are more touristy things to do and the party isn’t as wild. If you are a crazy couple (and we’ve had a ton within the years), then you will enjoy Salvador Carnival.
For Families
X
Hands down, Rio de Janeiro is the best carnival for families unless the kids are over 18. There are more things to do in Rio and the Samba Parade is jaw dropping although it does end pretty late.
For Brazilians
X
Salvador is hands down the most popular Carnival for 18 – 35 year old Brazilians. You will meet people there from the South, Big Cities, Interior, Amazon and Northeast.
Age 20 – 30
X
Definitely Salvador, if your young and want to party, this is the place to be.
Age 30 – 45
X
X
It all depends if you want a crazy party or a more sophisticated experience.
45 Plus
X
Generally, you will enjoy Rio de Janeiro more as it’s a little bit more tame, although don’t get me wrong, Rio de Janeiro in general is not at all tame, it’s just a bit tamer than Salvador Carnival.
Party Atmosphere   X No doubt it’s Salvador. Imagine millions of people just going absolutely nuts.
Sophistication
X
Rio is definitely more sophisticated than Salvador because it is a larger city and does have more exubarent parties like the Copacabana Palace Ball for instance. Although Salvador does have parties that are creme of the creme, like the Salvador Camarote. In both cases, all of the exuberant parties are very expensive.
Show
X
Carnival in Rio is the Greatest Show on Earth and beats any other show/parade in the world.
Tourism – Sites
X
Salvador has some historic sites, but during Carnival everything is pretty much closed. If you do want to check some sites out, it’s definitely better to get there a couple of days before Carnival.
Hotels
X
Rio de Janeiro is the 2nd largest city in Brazil, so it is going to have way better hotels. There are some good hotels in Salvador, but do not expect the 5 or even 4 star hotels you have at home.
Music
X
X
Axe (Salvador) vs. Samba (Rio). Samba is world reknown and has some crazy beats. You definitely have to have rhythm to dance. What I’ve seen is that the ladies usually get it and the guys just move their feet. Axe is a mixture of Brazilian pop, rock and Afro-rhythms and literally by the end of Carnival you’ll know the words to a lot of the songs.

Florianopolis, Brazil – New Jet-set Destination

Florianopolis Brazil (or Floripa, as the island is affectionately known by locals) is one of the world’s best surf spots and most beautiful locations, blessed with 42 pristine beaches, lush rolling hills, soft white sand dunes and sparkling lagoons. In addition, Floripa offers world-class dining and nightlife, as well as a tremendous array of extreme sports activities to please even the most discerning adventure enthusiast. Last but not least, Floripa offers a wealth of cultural attractions, including traditional Brazilian fairs and markets, Azorean architecture, and historical points of interest such as ancient forts used to defend the island against pirates and invaders. Floripa is as renowned throughout Latin America for its golden beaches as it is for the golden-haired bombshells that abound—Germans, Polish and Italians colonized the South of Brazil, explaining the Giselle Bündchen look-a-like phenomenon that you will see all over the island.

Most consider the ‘crowned jewel’ area of the island to be the region in the center of the east side of the island, in particular the Praia Mole and Lagoa da Conceição areas. Here visitors are enchanted by Floripa’s most stunning and unique natural beauty, with a number of fantastic beaches as well as lush green mountains, soft white sand dunes and the beautiful Lagoa da Conceição lagoon itself, which aside from stunning visuals also offers a large variety of leisure and sporting options such as boating, kite boarding, wakeboarding, fishing and swimming. If you are looking to stay in a place where the party/action is, we recommend Jurere Internacional, a chi-chi resort on the north end of the island. As far as nightlife and parties, we recommend traveling to Florianopolis Brazil between the months of December and March as it’s summer and the city has a lot of special events especially during Carnival and New Year’s Eve.

TGW Rio 2016 Recap

The Olympic Games only happen once every 4 years. It’s an extremely important event and labeled as the mecca in sporting events. Just imagine an event with more than 10,000 athletes competing in 31 sports!!! It’s a huge task for any city wanting to host it. The projected cost of the Olympics for Rio de Janeiro is estimated at over 11 billion US Dollars. So how did Rio de Janeiro do? It’s hard to base this on other Olympics as this was my first one, but I was actually very surprised on how well the city did. Here’s a brief Rio 2016 Recap of the Summer Olympics.

Months before the games even started, the main stream media was blowing everything up and scaring people to travel to Rio de Janeiro. External factors like the Brazilian economy & political situation, progress on the construction of event venues,  Zika, Terrorism scares, etc. were part of the daily news. Friends and Family living in the States would call me scared and ask me how everything was and meanwhile I was sipping on a caipirinha on Ipanema Beach and enjoying everything Rio has to offer with no care in the world. The day to day was totally normal. So moral of the story – PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ OR SEE ON THE NEWS!  The great thing about TGW is we have people at our destinations that are there to give you the honest truth. Our clients are our #1 priority and we would not put them in any danger or offer them something we would not personally do.

Bottom Line Rio de Janeiro put on a show! Yes, things were a little disorganized and last-minute preparations were done but at the end of the day, Rio de Janeiro showed the world that it can host a MEGA EVENT. Brazil had already done this in 2014 for the World Cup and Rio is used to hosting millions of people for Carnival and New Year’s. Here are my Top Takeaways from the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games:

  1. Legends Hung Up Their Cleats – It gives me goosebumps to say that I personally witnessed two of the top athletes ever compete! Usain Bolt (3 golds) and Michael Phelps (5 golds, 1 silver – 28 carrear total) went out with a bang.
    rio 2016 recap
  2. The Rio 2016 Venues – My jaw was literally floored by the new venues built or remodeled for the Games. They were definitely world class, but the venue that stood out to me was the Copacabana Beach Volleyball venue. It had an incredible, iconic backdrop built right on the sand.
    rio 2016 recap
  3.  Subway to Barra de Tijuca – One of if not the most important infrastructure to be built for the games was the Metro Line from Ipanema to Barra de Tijuca. The traffic between these two areas can take up to 2 to 3 hours, but now with the subway it’s only a 20 minute ride. Additional subway stations in Ipanema, Leblon & Sao Conrado were also built. This is definitely going to benefit the people of Rio as it will connect Barra with the rest of the city.
  4. Brazil Winning Gold in Football/Soccer – With all of its storied past including 5 World Cup wins, Brazil had never won an Olympic Gold for the beautiful game. Maracana Stadium literally exploded and gave the Brazilians a little bit of hope, not only in their team, but pride in their country after a rough year.
    rio 2016 recap
  5. Olympic Boulevard / Praca Maua – Rio’s port area has completely changed and has been revitalized. Once known as a dangerous part of town, this was the place to be during the Summer Games. Tons of Food Trucks lined the streets every day and there were a ton of events going on as well as some of Rio’s hottest parties. The Museum of Tomorrow is here and the new Rio Aquarium will also be inaugurated in the next couple of months! This will be a tourist destination in Rio de Janeiro for years to come!
    rio 2016 recap

This was a brief Rio 2016 Recap of the Summer Games. The list of great things that came from the Games is obviously longer, but hopefully I was able to get my point across. Rio is a great city and will continue to be a hot tourist destination. Yes, like any other city, it does have it’s downfalls and bad press, but it just seemed like before the Games, Rio could not get a break! The Games are over and Rio proved that it had what it takes to be an incredible host. If you weren’t able to make it and you were mesmerized and intrigued by this magical city, give TGW a call (786-522-3667) or fill out contact request below! We’ll be happy to show you Rio de Janeiro and make sure you have the time of your life!!!

Traveling to Ibiza in May 2014 – Opening Party Guide

If you can’t get to Ibiza in the summer, a great time to go is at the end of May. Anytime before this, it’s pretty much a ghost town when it comes to partying, but if you are looking to relax then it’s highly recommended.

If you are looking to party like most of our clients are then we recommend getting to Ibiza around May 21st. The weather in May is incredible. It’s hot, but not too hot and there are some incredible parties in store for that week. Below is a rundown of everything we recommend:

Ibiza Music Summit 2014

The Grand Finale of Ibiza’s very own music business conference, the International Music Summit (IMS), is one of the most unique parties in the world. Taking place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dalt Vila, high above Ibiza Town, the location is quite simply breathtaking and unlike any other in the electronic music world.

2012 saw Carl Cox, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler and more performing while 2013 Sven Väth, Solomun and Maya Jane Coles were the headliners. 2014 line ups will be announced soon – we at Spotlight can’t wait for this year’s edition.

This is one party you will not want to miss, acting as the official/unofficial start of the season, you can roll from Dalt Vila down the hill towards Sankeys double header openings, Ushuaia, Space and DC10 openings – we challenge you to find a better weekend of music. The closing parties of the summit are set for May 22 & 23.

Ibiza May 2014 Club Openings:

Sankeys Opening (May 21 & 22):

Spread out over two nights, clubbers get an amazing taster of what to expect at Sankeys in 2014. The first night on Wednesday 21st May is Tribal Sessions, headlined by no other than the legend that is Danny Tenaglia and joined by an army of comrades such as Darius Syrossian, Enzo Siragusa, Greg Vickers, Shlomi Aber, Sidney Charles, Jozef K, Dave Rosario and more yet to be announced.

The second part, happening on Thursday 22nd May, sees VIVa head honcho Steve Lawler, Hot Since 82, Amine Edge & Dance, Andrea Oliva, Finnebassen, The Element, Miss Soulfly and more DJs still to be confirmed  gracing the decks in Sankeys Basement, L.A.B. and Spektrum.

Ushuaia Opening (May 24)

Ushuaïa Ibiza kicks off its 2014 season on Saturday 24th May. The Ushuaïa Hotel (Club and Tower) is open from 1st of May onwards.

This huge outdoor venue has grown in popularity over the years, resembling more a boutique festival environment than a club atmosphere, and now the opening party is a heavy fixture on the clubbing calendar. We’re talkign next level production from the main stage and the pool area akin to a major concert or festival. Ice cannons, lasers, stage performers and acrobats… all accompanied by what will surely be a massive lineup filled with artists they love and who they will be working with over the season.

Space Opening (May 25)

The Space Opening party is considered by most on the island to be the signal that the clubbing season has started as it forms the jewel of a wild weekend of parties. With IMS, Ushuaïa, Sankeys and DC10 all enjoying huge parties on the same weekend for their openings (or the Grand Finale closing in IMS’ case!) you need to be in this for the long haul!

DC 10 Opening (May 26)

Circo Loco is about as DC-10 as DC-10 gets. From humble beginnings in 1999 the Monday party (which still holds down the same weekly slot today) has become one of the most desirable Ibiza has to offer, irresistible to anyone who likes clubbing in its purist form. The Circo Loco opening party for 2014 (which doubles as the DC-10 opening) has been announced for Monday the 26th of May. Line-ups, as usual, are tight under wraps and expected to stay that way until very close to the date.

Fuck Me I’m Famous Opening (May 29)

David Guetta’s Fuck Me I’m Famous party has been the craziest night in Ibiza for the past 5 years. Every Thursday after May 29th, you will literally see a line out the block.

Privilege Opening (May 30)

The opening of Privilege always attracts the people of the beautiful island and the venue in its various incarnations has hosted successful parties for many years. They’ve got a lot of friends, which of course they need to fill the cavernous interior.

In 2014 the opening party falls on Friday the 30th of May – put it in your diary clubbers!

There is no info available yet on the DJ line up – we will update as soon as we know more. But the show elements and the podium dancers are guaranteed show stoppers whether it is because of their stunning beauty or their weird yet enticing outfits, so you should definitely check out Privilege Opening party if you’re on the island around that date!

Amnesia Opening (May 31)

The Opening (and Closing) Parties at Amnesia are renowned for their energy and longevity; we might have mentioned them once or twice over the years…

In 2014, Amnesia is opening on Saturday 31st May, which means the earliest date ever for their opening party.

The Main Room line up is already out and includes an amazing selection of the moment’s hottest tech house and techno artists: Maya Jane Coles, Adam Beyer, Joris Voorn, Scuba, Kölsch and Amnesia resident DJ Les Schmitz will be bringing you aural pleasantries galore.

The famous Terrace will obviously also be open – but its line up will only be revealed in a second step around mid-Feb.

Just looking at the upcoming calendar of events and talking to Ibiza Regulars,  we give you the top early announcements for the 2013 Ibiza Season.

  1. The Pacha Line-up – Pacha is definitely one of the best clubs in the world. It’s a franchise, but the first club started in Ibiza in the 70s. With top tiered DJs demanding outrageous pay-days, the club has decided to go a different direction. Mainstays at the club for years – Eric Morillo & Luciano – are leaving and Tiesto has opted out of being a resident in Ibiza this summer to be in Vegas. David Guetta will still be rocking the house on Thursdays for his Fuck Me I’m Famous party, which started at Pacha. Even though two of it’s biggest stars have departed. Pacha is still going to have a sick lineup for you this summer. DJs that will be performing at Pacha this summer include Guy Gerber (resident on Wednesdays), Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Solomun, Bing Players, Paul Oakenfold, Hardwell, Nicky Romero, Bob Sinclair and the list goes on and on. pacha
  2. Bomba Ibiza – Bomba Ibiza will be the new kid on the block this summer. Ibiza’s new club will be located in front of the Ibiza Marina, where Club Heaven used to be. Danny Whittle (Pacha Ibiza’s former Manager) has established a sick lineup for the club, which will feature the former Pacha Mainstays – Eric Morillo and Luciano as well as the Defected Party, which will feature Dennis Ferrer. The new club is backed by lifetime mogul Giuseppe Cipriani. Besides the great lineup the club is going to focus on Service (25% will be VIP) and will probably boast one of the best sound systems on the island, which will be custom fit  and designed by Pioneer bombaibiza
  3. Ibiza Mainstays – The 2013 Line-up is still being revamped at Ibiza’s biggest clubs and should hopefully be 100% finished in mid-May. Below are some mainstay DJ’s & Parties from last year.
    1. Privilege: Armin Van Buren State of Trance on Mondays
    2. Space: Carl Cox & Friends on Tuesdays, We Love Sundays
    3. Amnesia: Sven Vath & Cocoon on Mondays, Cream featuring Paul Van Dyke, Laid Back Luke & Calvin Harris on Thursdays
    4. Ushuaia: David Guetta on Mondays, Avicci on Sundays stateoftrance
  4. New Over-the-Top Pacha Property and Ushuaia Tower Add-on
    1. Destino Pacha Ibiza Resort – The Pacha brand never does anything by halves . . . new to the island this summer, the Destino Pacha Ibiza Resort offers an all-encompassing resort experience which typifies everything that’s desirable in the Ibiza lifestyle. Perched atop the cliffs of Cap Martinet near Talamanca, Destino’s panoramic views take in Ibiza town and the medieval fortress Dalt Vila, the sands of neighbouring island Formentera and a dazzling stretch of the Mediterranean. It is only a short taxi ride to Pacha itself and the surrounding bars of Ibiza town, but remote enough to feel like an oasis from the hectic side of Ibiza life. destino-pacha
    2. Ushuaia Adding Tower Residence – The Ushuaia Tower, replacing the existing Fiesta Playa d’en Bossa hotel. The spectacular eight floor hotel forms part of an expansion of the existing Ushuaia Beach hotel. Directly next door to Ushuaia Beach Hotel, the Ushuaia Tower offers guests the full Ushuaia experience but with a little more exclusivity. With full access to the amenities of the Ushuaia Beach hotel and club, Ushuaia Tower guests can enjoy the unique hotel as well as all the benefits of a luxury hotel. Ushuaia-Towers

New York Times names Rio de Janeiro #1 Place to go in 2013

The New York Times recently named Rio de Janeiro as the #1 place to go in 2013!!! If you are looking to travel to Rio de Janeiro in 2013 and have the time of your life, we recommend checking out our Rio de Janeiro Travel Packages. Here is a caption from the NY times article: ” Fifty-three years after Brazil’s federal government decamped to Brasília, and decades after São Paulo took over as the country’s business capital, Rio is staging a comeback. With the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics (plus an oil boom) providing the impetus, the tropical city perhaps most famous for its Carnival hedonism is on its way to becoming a more sophisticated cultural hub. In January, the Cidade das Artes, or City of the Arts, was inaugurated as the new home of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. On March 23, Casa Daros — an outpost of the Zurich-based Daros Latinamerica Collection  — will open in a renovated 19th-century building with an exhibition of Colombian artists. March will also mark the opening of the Rio Museum of Art in Praça Mauá, a once decrepit port area now being revived. (The Santiago Calatrava-designed Museum of Tomorrow, also in the port area, is scheduled to follow in 2014.) Shopping, a Rio obsession, got a boost in December when the luxe VillageMall opened; it will soon house the city’s first Gucci outlet and South America’s first Apple Store. Special events also dot the coming year’s calendar, including the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day in July, the biennial Rio Book Fair starting in late August, and September’s Rock in Rio. And, of course, there’s soccer: the finals of the Confederations Cup, considered a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, will be held in a completely overhauled Maracanã Stadium on June 30. —  Seth Kugel” To check out the complete article and list of 46 places to travel to in 2013, go here: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/01/10/travel/2013-places-to-go.html.

The New Maracana Stadium – What to Expect

This past weekend the TGW Staff was able to check out Maracana Stadium, one of if not the most iconic soccer stadium in the world. It was a Fluminese vs. Flamengo Classic game. The tickets to the game ranged from 50 to 100 reais (US$20 – US$70), which is considered costly to Brazilians and thus resulted in the very low attendance of 18,000 people. Fluminese won the game 3-0 on counter attack goals as Flamengo controlled most of the game. The game wasn’t too exciting but what did get us excited was the actual stadium itself. It actually felt as if we were in a US or European Stadium.

The renovation of the stadium took 3 years and over US$500 million. The original seating bowl, with a two-tier configuration, was demolished, giving way to a new one-tier seating bowl. The new seats are colored yellow, blue and white forming along with the green of the match field, the Brazilian national colors. The visibility of the field is great no matter where you seat. The original stadium’s roof in concrete was demolished and substituted with a fiberglass tensioned membrane coated with Teflon. The new roof will cover 95% of the seats inside the stadium, unlike the former design, where protection was given to some seats in the upper ring and also from the seats of the bleachers above the gate access of each sector.

As far as the new capacity, it’s currently at 73,500. This is a lot less than the crowd that was at the Maracanazo in 1950 of 200,000.

As far as getting to the stadium, the quickest and most cost-effective (7 reais round-trip) is taking the subway. From Zona Sul (South Zone), you have to take metro Line 2 in direction of Pavuna. During the week and on World Cup match days the line operates from Botafogo to Pavuna and can be taken at any stop in between. You would get off at Maracana Station and the stadium is only a 2 minute walk from the station.

For the World Cup, Maracana Stadium will be host to 7 World Cup Games:
June 15 – Argentina vs. Bosnia
June 18 – Chile vs. Spain
June 21 – Belgium vs. Russia
June 25 – Ecuador vs. France
June 28 – Round of 16 Game
July 04 – Quarter Final
July 12 – World Cup Final
