Pamplona City Tour

After breakfast, the guides will take you on a Pamplona City Walking Tour of the Old Town.

The tour begins with the explanation of the Running of the Bulls and the history of the San Fermin festival. Then we will see the Bullfighting Arena and stroll down the famous Estafeta Street. Then, we ascend to the Cathedral, which rests on the highest part of the City. Constructed by the order of the King of Navarra Charles III in the 15th century, the gothic Cathedral bears a magnificent 18th-century neoclassical façade. We will have the chance to take in the view from atop the city walls, located just behind the Cathedral, at the Bastion of Redin.

It is from this hilltop that we begin to explain the history of Pamplona, from its Roman foundations in 75 B.C., which were built atop a Basque village, to its period as the capital of the Kingdom of Navarra, and later its conquest by the Kingdom of Castille in 1512. At the French Gate, one of the original gates in the city walls, we stand at the entrance to Pamplona of the Camino de Santiago, the route that leads travelers down the ancient pilgrimage trail to Santiago de Compostela.

Following the Pilgrims Street, we arrive at the Town Hall. The building has a baroque-style façade, constructed in 1756, and it is known throughout the world as the launch site for the famous chupinazo or rocket which marks the beginning of the nine-day Festival of Saint Fermin. Nearby, we come upon the San Saturnino Church, a charming example of 13th-century craftsmanship, with a grand baroque chapel dedicated to the Virgen of the Road, patron-saint of the city.
