Hotel Borg by Keahotels was originally built by Jóhannes Jósefsson, a famous strong-man, and adventurer. After competing in the 1908 Olympics and traveling in America with Barnum & Baileys circus, he returned to Iceland in 1927 with one goal: a dream to build a luxury hotel. As the first millennium celebrations of the republic were at hand, a hotel fit for foreign heads of state, dignitaries, and celebrities were desperately needed in ReykjavÃk.
The cornerstone was laid in 1928. Eighteen months later, in January 1930, Hotel Borg by Keahotels opened its restaurant and four months after that, in May, the hotel itself was opened and began to receive guests. The proud owner of this new landmark building, Jósefsson was usually referred to as Jóhannes at Borg.
Ever since its opening in 1930, the history of Hotel Borg has been intertwined with the history of the country as many historical events and meetings have occurred within its walls.
Today, Hotel Borg has been renovated and recently expanded with every detail restored to mirror its former glory of the 1930s. Our mission is to continue this dream of our founder by continuing to offer first-class service and accommodation into this century.
Dignified and imposing, Hotel Borg overlooks the beautiful square of Austurvöllur, in the heart of ReykjavÃk, across from Althingi, the Icelandic parliament, and the cathedral.

The hotel’s 99 rooms and suites, with Art Deco style throughout, are elegantly appointed yet offer an extensive array of modern amenities.
On Hotel Borg’s ground floor Jamie’s Italian is set in the Golden Hall (Gyllti Salurinn), known for its unique oval ceiling mural.
The restaurant is a part of Jamie’s Italian restaurant chain, which draws inspiration from the Italian way of life – their traditions, values, and passion for food.
Designed to give tribute both to Italian culture treasured by one of the founders, Jamie Oliver, and the beautiful characteristics of Hotel Borg, the restaurant offers an atmosphere pleasing for the eye.
