Juma Lodge Amazon

Location: Amazon Jungle
Address: Autazes – State of Amazonas, 69240-000

Description:

The Juma Amazon Lodge is located in a remote and untouched region 100 km (62 miles) southeast of Manaus.  It can be reached in approximately three hours by vans and boats  in each direction.

The Juma Lodge Amazon features 21 intimate bungalows seamlessly nestled into the lush surroundings of the Amazon Rainforest. To accommodate the water levels of the wet season (often rising to 15 meters or 49 feet), the property was built on stilts upon solid ground resting at the treetop level.

Juma Lodge Amazon is entirely eco-friendly in design and construction. All materials used in the construction of Juma are native and found abundantly in the region, carefully extracted from the surrounding area.

Both the construction and the architectural style of the lodge reflect the techniques employed by Amazon River natives when building their own homes.

Reflecting its environment, Juma Lodge Amazon is rustic yet beautiful, offering guests an optimized blend of authenticity and comfort. The lodge’s footprint is minimalist, yet elegant in concept.

Eight of our bungalows offer views of the surrounding forest, 12 are riverfront and one is panoramic. All bungalows have private bathrooms with hot water solar systems, porches with hammocks, and ceiling fans ideal for the Amazonian night, which tends to be far cooler than Manaus.

Bungalows overlooking the forest are located between the lobby patio and the restaurant. Their location allows for easy access for the elderly or anyone with any locomotive difficulty. Because the forest bungalows are closer to one another, they make for an excellent choice for families with small children.

Located in a more secluded and exclusive area of the lodge, our river-view bungalows are nestled into the canopy of the trees, reaching 15 meters (49 ft) above the ground during the dry season. Ensuring the utmost level of privacy, the river view bungalows were designed to be fully integrated into the forest.

The restaurant, specializing in both local and international cuisine, offers its guests an exceptional view of the Juma River. Served buffet style, the menu is constantly changing and offers a great variety of flavors.

Notes: This Lodge does NOT have Air Conditioning. It usually is not an issue due to the Breezes. Internet Access is very limited and not guaranteed. It is recommended to bring cash with you for incidentals.

2 Night / 3 Day Sample Itinerary

Sample Itinerary (subject to change)

Day 1 – Departure toward Juma begins early in the morning, with guests being picked up between 6:30 and 7:30 am at their Manaus hotel or the airport*. The journey to Juma takes a total of three hours divided into three parts: speed boat, van, and speed boat again. En route to Juma, we stop to observe the magnificent Meeting of the Waters, where the muddy waters of the Solimões River meet the black waters of the Negro River. At this crucial junction point, the two rivers, without actually mixing, run side by side, thus forming the great Amazon River. Passengers will feel the difference in temperature between the two distinct rivers. Upon arrival at Juma Amazon Lodge, enjoy a warm greeting where a welcome drink with exotic fruits awaits you. You’ll then have your first lunch at the lodge, comprised of both regional and international cuisine. Following lunch, we will depart for a canoe trip. Our canoeing tour provides an in-depth exploration of the igarapés (Amazonian creeks) and the igapós (flooded forest), an experience made possible only by paddle canoes. During the excursion, you’ll be encouraged to swim and may encounter some of the river’s most majestic creatures: pink dolphins. Return to the lodge for dinner. Later, we’ll embark on an evening expedition to observe frogs, birds, and most importantly, caymans. Our guide uses his flashlight to help spot caymans. With this light, we can see the cayman’s eyes, which reflects a bright red dot, as the animal remains paralyzed and visible. The guide is then able to bring the cayman aboard for participants to see. Afterward, the cayman is returned to the river, unharmed.

Juma also offers an afternoon pick up in Manaus which departs from the Manaus airport at approximately 1:30 pm. For those arriving via afternoon transfer, lunch and canoe tours are not offered. Guests with flights arriving into Manaus after 1:30 pm will stay in a city hotel and will be picked up for the early morning transfer the following day.

Day 2 – Early in the morning we will depart for a sunrise excursion witnessing the transformation of the sky and listening to the sounds of the waking birds. Our guides are equipped with binoculars to complement this experience with bird watching. Enjoy breakfast with typical fruits and regional food. Depart for a jungle hike. In this educational jungle walk, our expert guide will introduce you to the wildlife of the Amazon. He will show you plants and describe their uses, as many are edible or medicinal. The paths implemented in exploration walks are constantly changed to avoid damaging the forest with overuse. Return to the lodge for lunch with regional and international cuisine. Later in the afternoon, we’ll board a motorboat with one of our guides to fish and learn more about the infamous piranha, as well as other Amazonian fish native to the river. While enjoying the sunset from the boat we’ll return to Juma. Dinner will be provided from the fish you caught earlier in the afternoon. Following dinner, one of our native guides will offer an informal lecture regarding everyday life in the Amazon and the legends, traditions, and culture of the region.

Day 3 – Breakfast followed by departure from the lodge. On the way back to Manaus, we will stop at the Pirarucu Floating Dock to see the giant Pirarucu fish (also known as Arapaima), reaching 3 meters high (9,8 ft) and 200 kg (440 lbs)! From the Floating Dock, you can feed the fish and observe their impressive strength. From there you will return to Manaus, arriving around 12:00 pm. You will be dropped off either at the airport or your Manaus hotel.
