We are sad to announce that Rio Carnival 2021 is postponed. Rio’s world famous samba parade , which is held at the Sambodrome will NOT take place in February of 2021.This is the first time in over a century, since 1912 that Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is postponed. LIESA, the (Independent League of Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools) met yesterday in Rio and decided to postpone the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today it was also announced that the “blocos” or street parties will also NOT take place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event may be held later in 2021 but no new date has been set. Rio authorities are monitoring the situation and will hold another meeting either in October or November 2020, to discuss a potential new date for the festival but it is largely unknown as to when/if it will take place until a vaccine becomes widely available.
