Cartagena Independence Week is a great time to visit this magical city. On November 11, 1811, Cartagena became the first Colombian city to declare independence from Spain. This declaration of independence is the event that kickstarted the Latin American Wars of Independence.
This is a national holiday, so you will find Colombia’s jet-set from the big cities (Bogota, Medellin & Cali) in Cartagena enjoying the festivities. The beaches are packed, and the nightlife is incredible during this time. From Wednesday to Sunday, there are parades and special events all over the city.
Unlike other times of the year, Cartagena has a ton of big events during this week such as the Batalla de las Flores (parade on Cartagena’s main avenue), as well as concerts and the local beauty queen competition. The nightclubs in Cartagena also host special events this week, so expect the nightlife to be better than other times of the year.
